25th July 2007 - John Shewbrooks

Pictured is John Shewbrooks in a nasty roll on Friday night in his new Midget Race Car he rebuilt over the winter.
John has parked his 2.5 Mod Hydroplane "Sho nuff" after a nasty wreck in Waterford Michigan last year, the accident tore off the left hand sponson and did substantial damage to the left side of the hull. Chris Cordle was pilot in "Sho nuff" when the nasty crash happened. John is planning to rebuild the hull at a later date.
In the meantime he is enjoying racing his Midget Car throughout Indiana and at some like tracks.

19th March 2006 - Auckland Regatta

The Little Cracker Team had a varied day during there scheduled 3 races.
Race one and the Boat developed an electrical Fault and Alan returned to shore and the Team began to pull apart the electrical system to find the Fault. It didn't seem to be anything other than a loose wire.
The Team put the Boat in the water for Race two expecting things to go better but the Boat refused to Fire at all and drifted slowly away from the dock. After the Boat was returned it was quickly discovered that the Kill Switch wire had fallen Off, something so simple can stop the Boat.
Race 3 and it was third time lucky has the Boat fired up and went off to a good race with Malcolm Wotton "Renegade" and Daniel Pollack "Undertaker". Alan leapt away at the Start and Malcolm was in Catch up mode in his bigger GNH Boat, Daniel was having a rougher time of it in the smaller Boat and settled in for Third. Lap 2 and Malcolm finally caught up with Alan and the two battled it out for the rest of the race with Malcolm sneaking home the Winner.

Today's Racing looks like the weather will play its part and hopefully some of the Boats that Broke yesterday will be going again today.

4th March 2006 - Jimmy Shane

These Images are from 20yr old Jimmy Shane of Maryland, USA.
I had the pleasure of staying for a few days at the Shane Home last October, Jimmy is driver of Weber Brothers 5 litre Hydro, 2.5 Modified Hydro "Geezer Boat" and his very own 2.5 stock Hydro. Jimmy's Sister Kelly also races as well as Robin Shane (Mum) is the APBA Inboard director and also races her own 1.5 Hydro. Jimmy's Dad Stuart Shane is the backbone of the entire team, he has many years of racing experience under his belt and still drives at the odd Regatta.

This new boat is a real credit to not only Jimmy but Stuart and Robin for raising such a wonderful young man with a big future ahead of him. I understand that Kelly Shane is also helping to build the new 2.5 Stock Hydro.

What a great family.

26th February 2006 - South Island Tour

The Little Cracker Team had a disappointing trip to Lake Rotoiti with a small Electric Wire causing the engine to miss on the turns once that fault was discovered the boat went great for the last race of Saturday but there was still something amiss with the electrics on Sunday and the Little Cracker struggled to be as competitive as it can with the bigger Grand National Hydroplanes.
Off the Water the team enjoyed themselves in the party atmosphere of the Lakes District.

This was to Be Little Crackers Last Race meeting but with a Sale deal falling through during the week the Team will run the boat at the Manukau/Auckland Regatta in March.

20th February 2006 - South Island Tour

Ben Brenninkmeyer & Alexia Wittgenstein are a Dutch and German Couple based in the United kingdom who were also on a New Zealand Tour and stopped by for a chat with Alan Lewis and the Little Cracker Team. A very Nice couple who took a liking to the Sport.

Racing wasn't the best today with a very rough Track during the latter part of the day. A small crack was noticed in the Prop so it was out with the smaller Prop for the rest of the day. race 1 and the Fuel Pump wire popped off stopping the Boat, the next race saw Alan cut off at the turn costing him valuable ground
after that the rough water saw Alan decide to park the Boat for the rest of the Day.

19th February 2006 - New Zealand Champion Again

Alan Lewis yesterday won the New Zealand Modified Hydroplane Championship at Lake Kaniere, Hokitika.

Alan using only a Skeleton Crew of American Brian Weymouth took on a strong field of the South Island's best Modified Hydroplanes and won the both Heats comfortably to ensure he won the Championship.

The Boat ran effortlessly with only minor Sparkplug problems causing a headache. Alan also raced in the Grand National Hydroplane Championship and finished runner up in that Title chase to Darryl Friend in Terminator.

Alan's Father Won a New Zealand Title at this Lake in 1964 and this was Alan's first race at Lake Kaniere which has two small islands as one Turn and is settled in the High Hills on the West Coast of the South Island where there is no Mobile Coverage. Alan was very proud to have duplicated the feats of his father all those years ago.
The Team will probably sit back and take it easy today and focus on next weekends Masport Cup as the finale to the Little Crackers Racing Career

15th February 2006 - South Island Tour

Brian Weymouth (USA) and Alan Lewis are doing the road trip south with Little Cracker, We have cut back on crew to save money which will allow us to race both weekends in the South Island. We will compete for both Grand National and Modified Hydroplane Championships. The following weekend at Nelson we will race for the Masport Cup.

Little Cracker is 4 Sale, I already have two interested parties however nothing is confirmed. Please contact Alan Lewis on 027 486 9730 if anyone is interested.

6th February 2006 - UIM World Championship

Alan Lewis went into Battle against the American JJW Hydroplane Team as well as Australian Darren Penington and 10 other Kiwi Teams for the UIM 2.5 Modified World Hydroplane Championships on the weekend.
Dustin Echols in Miss Silver Clouds Inns was always going to be the big Threat to the Little Cracker Team but they were prepared to give there all to win. The Race meeting was going well with the Boat performing as well as it ever has and after securing pole 2 on the outside of the Americans in the Final Race.
At the Start of the Race Alan was holding his own down the straight and after one and a half laps he pulled along side Dustin and the race everyone was hoping for looked to be on, but alas the Miss Silver Cloud Inns boat had a little something extra and pulled away to win comfortably

1st February 2006 - Marsh Motorsports Trophy

The World Championships wont be the only thing on the Minds of the Modified hydroplane Teams this Weekend as they will also be out to compete for the magnificent Marsh Motorsports Trophy.
This will be only the Second time the Trophy has been competed for and last years race was a tremendous duel which was eventually won by Steve Mathieson in Midnight.
The Trophy is an Offshore Prop that was donated as a Trophy by Marsh Motorsports and was Mounted by Terry Mathieson of Project Kitchens Tauranga.

29th January 2006 - Downtown Wanganui

Little Cracker absolutely wowed the Crowd at Downtown Wanganui when he went out in very rough water and got some big air.
Alan was very pleased with the performance of the boat which has had all the Steering overhauled and now has no vibration.

Things are looking very good for the Little Cracker Team at next weekends UIM World Championships.

22nd January 2006 - Summer Wine is Back

Sunday January 22nd, I have received confirmation that former National Champion Geoff Robinson of Tauranga and his Team spent Sunday morning testing the Alfa Romeo 2.8 V6 ready for the 2006 U.I.M World 2.5 Modified Hydroplane Championship.
Geoff said, "I ran the boat until the fuel tank was almost dry and the engine temperature was perfect for the entire run".
The Summer Wine Team have spent the last 3 years trying different ways of stopping the potent little V6 Alfa from overheating, it seems their luck has changed just in time for the World Championship, which Geoff will certainly be a red hot contender.

To Geoff, Wendy and the Summer Wine Team, "Welcome back from the Modified Hydroplane Drivers Club"

Alan Lewis
President Modified Hydroplane Drivers Club.

Off to New Zealand to defend world title
January 16, 2006

By Bud McKay

SEATTLE – NFL players and coaches prepare for the playoffs watching countless hours of videotape of their upcoming opponents, looking for the small edge in defeating them. This investment of time is all in the hopes of getting to the Super Bowl.

Duvall’s Dustin Echols is no different as he prepares to compete in the Super Bowl for the 2.5-Litre Modified hydroplane racing – the World Championships at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge, New Zealand, Feb. 3-5. Echols is the current world record holder in the class at 137.2 mph and is the defending 2.5-Litre Modified world champion driving the Miss Silver Cloud Inns hydroplane.

15,000 holiday makers and Iron Man supporters were in Mt Maunganui on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th to catch a preview of the "A20 Silver Cloud Hotels" World Champion 2.5 Modified Hydroplane from Seattle, Washington USA. New Zealand drivers Terry Mathieson, Janine White and Alan Lewis were at the display to hand out flyers and to talk about the U.I.M World Hydroplane Championship coming up on February 4th 5th at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge.
The JJW Hydroplane Race Team along with World Champion Driver Dustin Echols will arrive in Auckland on Tuesday January 31st to prepare for the race

4th January 2006 - Lake Maraetai, Mangakino

8 0f the 9 Modified Hydroplanes & 1 GNH wait for Helter Skelter

The Modified Hydroplanes put on the best racing of the Regatta at the weekend.
The second day was a blow out with the winds whipping up white caps even an attempt to shift the course was not enough to ensure safety for Boats and Drivers

Race 1 & 2 results have been misplaced although "Renegade" Malcom Wotton won Race 1 and Nigel Zander in "Helter Skelter" won Race 2

2nd January 2006 - Lake Maraetai, Mangakino

The Little Cracker Team Went to Mangakino for the Geyserland Regatta to test the boat in preparation for the UIM 2006 2.5 Modified hydroplane World Championships which are run in New Zealand on the 4th & 5th of February.
A good turn out of 9 Modified Hydroplanes meant some good racing was on the cards although for most concerned The Day was all about testing and preparation for the upcoming World Championships.

The Little Cracker team had spent the previous day installing the freshened Alfa Romeo Engine and arrived in Mangakino late at night but in good Spirits to celebrate New Years Eve.

The Boats Rudder had been lengthened which meant the boat would need some fine tuning in the setup and as result after warm ups in the first two races Alan decided not to start and returned to shore to work more on the Boat.

The last race of the Day for the Modified Hydroplanes turned out to be a Cracker of a race with a tight battle for the top 3 between "Helter Skelter" Nigel Zander, "Predator" Janine White & "Little Cracker" Alan Lewis. A Little further back in the field another close struggle was evolving with Tony Hall "Tempest", Steve Mathieson "Midnight" & Brody/Terry Mathieson "Meridian"

At some point in the late stages of the race the Little Cracker developed a Crack in its skin at the right rear of the boat. Water pressure got in and tore of the skin along the side and then blew off a part of the top Skin. The damage is superficial and with a bit of hard work by the Master Builder Graham Zander the Boat will be repaired in no Time.

4th November 2005 - Chuck Miller

I read on the Go-Boat Racing Website Chuck Miller is racer of the week, this is well deserved, Chuck is a true Racer and Gentleman, I am sure he will pull through this trauma he is in right now.
I want to share with you some time I had with Chuck recently at Wildwood New Jersey. After racing was cancelled on Saturday due to rough water, Chuck called me over to the back of his truck where he had a cooler and some nice cold stiff Rum-n-Coke going, well I tasted one of these drinks and could not resist more refills, as we got more of this "Miller Medicine" in to us we chatted about boat racing back in the 70's 80's 90's and now.
We had people stop by to see what all the laughter was about, Patrick Howarth of Valleyfield stopped for a drink, Mark Weber, Jeff Ayler, Dennis Macey, Stuart Shane, John Fitzgerald to name a few all stopped by the Miller truck to see why we were having so much fun, many a tall story were told that Saturday afternoon.

"This is why boat racing is so much fun"

5th August 2005 - Dustin Echols 2005 UIM 2.5 Modified Hydroplane World Champion

Twenty five year old diesel mechanic Dustin Echols of Duvall, Washington State, USA was crowned World Champion at Cambridge Maryland on Saturday 30th July 2005. I talked to Justin today on his cell phone, he had plenty to talk about..............

Alan - Well Dustin firstly congratulations and well done on a awesome effort, you are World Champion, how do feel ?
Dustin - Thank you Alan I feel great it is the best feeling ever, this is my biggest achievement in boat racing for sure.

Alan - That must be a great feeling, tell me about the weekend, how was the water conditions and were you nervous at all.
Dustin - Friday was a wash out, I have never seen so much rain it just rained so heavy, we got to run one heat on Saturday which the 2004 World Champion Jim Aid crossed the line in 1st place however he was disqualified for crossing through a no go area, so it was on to the final and oh by the way I was damn nervous knowing I would be competing against the best in the World.

Alan - The weather at Cambridge was not in my favour at last years Worlds either I know how you must have been feeling, still as we say, that is boat racing and we can not control the weather and yes my stomach was full of butterflies last year as well. What motor were you running, was it the ex "Fast Freddie" Ford Eslinger 166.
Dustin - Yes we ran the bottom half of 166 and put on my head with the Holley 500 two barrel carburetor, it seem to work real well and gave me some good speed.

Alan - Shit you are kidding me, you ran a petrol carb, how much horsepower do you reckon you had.
Dustin - Yes we used the same top end set up that you saw us run at Black Lake last July, yeah it probably makes as little as 340 horse power.

Alan - OK Dustin tell me all about the final, I heard you got a perfect start and drove to the end like a true champion.
Dustin - Alan it was not all easy, firstly I lost radio contact with my crew so had to rely on my mirrors to see the other boats around me, the boat felt really good, I got in lane 2 with Chuck Miller in lane 1 and Jim Aid on my right in lane 3, I don't know what happened to Ann Fitzgerald, I saw her later and I think she broke before the start, anyway I got a perfect start, managed to stay with Chuck for a few laps, I think Jim Aid must have got some bad water that slowed him down, I could not believe how fast that boat of Chuck Millers is, anyway I got a break and lead by 2 rooster tails at the finish, I could not believe I had just won the World Championship.

Alan - That is a fantastic effort Dustin well done, well you know the 2006 UIM 2.5 Mod Hydro World Championship is to be run here in February, maybe you should put "Lil Hare" on a ship and come down under to defend your World Championship title.
Dustin - Oh really I did not know that, I will defiantly talk with team owner Justin Weymouth and get back to you next week, I would love to race in New Zealand, I am not driving this weekend (had too many days away from work) Dutch Squires is to drive the boat, that will feel weird for me knowing the boat is racing and I am not there driving it however I will drive the following weekend at Hampton Virginia at the Summer Nationals.

Alan - OK thanks for your time Dustin, tell Justin congratulations, good luck at Hampton and I hope to see you in New Zealand for the 2006 Worlds.
